Say goodbye to drugstore brands that still test on animals. Minnesota is the proud home of three cosmetic manufacturers that are local and PETA-certified. Aromi Beauty, Sigma Beauty, and Elixery Cosmetic House produce quality cosmetics and take pride in their cruelty-free practices. These Minneapolis-brands should be on your radar!
Cruelty-free beauty brands have gained popularity in recent years. There’s something to be admired about a company that refuses to test on animals, especially when they produce products that we use every day.
While drugstore and high-end brands like Revlon, Maybelline, and Dior are staples in the beauty industry, they still test on animals. Yes, even in 2020.
Luckily, Minnesota is home to several cosmetic companies that don’t test on animals, and we found the best ones! Sigma Beauty, Aromi Beauty, and Elixery Cosmetic House are based in the Twin Cities and self-proclaimed animal-lovers. They are each certified cruelty-free through PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies Program, and we are big fans!
Sigma Beauty
With its headquarters located just south of the Twin Cities, Sigma Beauty was founded by Dr. Simone Xavier and Rene Xavier Filho in 2009. With the initial goal of producing high-quality makeup products at an affordable price, Sigma’s goals have expanded. I asked Dr. Xavier a few questions to learn more.
“Today, we are focusing on developing a cruelty-free, vegan, and clean makeup line. All of our current color cosmetics are cruelty-free and most are vegan. Any non-vegan products are actively being reformulated to abide by vegan standards,” explains Xavier.
“Sigma has always been known for our state-of-the-art… synthetic brush designs.” Synthetic means no animal hairs are used in their brushes. “I love the possibility of creating a very functional product that solves a problem,” Xavier shares.
Sigma offers a wide range of color collections and frequently evaluates their price range to ensure their products are available to everyone. They also recently launched their clean beauty program, having excluded 70 harsh chemicals from their makeup line. “We want to be one of the cleanest makeup brands out there. We feel clean beauty can still be edgy and that is what we are going for.” Currently, Sigma Beauty products are available in over 70 countries.

Aromi Beauty
Aromi Beauty, located in Minnetonka, Minnesota, is in line with Sigma’s cruelty-free practices. Aromi’s website includes a pledge that explains just how passionate they are about creating cruelty-free makeup products.
“We love our animals and strongly believe that using animal-derived raw materials in our cosmetics is completelyunnecessary. We do not test any of our products on animals and we also do not use raw materials that have been tested on animals,” the website states. Aromi also refuses to sell or ship products to countries that require animal testing.
Aromi truly takes pride in what they do. They formulate, blend, and pour every product at their laboratory in Minnetonka. They handle all of their sourcing and shipping as well. When it comes to Aromi’s products, their main focus is lipsticks and lip tints. They offer a wide range of vibrant colors and finishes, including bright blues and metallics. Aromi’s packaging is super cute too, always as colorful as their products!

Elixery Cosmetic House
Dedicated to old-fashioned craftsmanship, Elixery Cosmetic House is yet another local and cruelty- free beauty brand that should be on your radar. Elixery is located on Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis, inside a vintage laboratory.
Producing ultra-high-end beauty products like lipsticks, perfumes, and eye creams, Elixery is both cruelty-free and vegan, and PETA- and Leaping Bunny-certified. Not only does Elixery source the safest and most ethical ingredients, but they formulate and develop their colors and products from scratch.
Elixery also believes in gender equality, and that everyone should be free to express themselves. You can find Elixery lipsticks and perfumes in local boutiques and salons throughout the Twin Cities.
When there’s the option to support cruelty-free cosmetic brands, purchasing makeup from companies that still test on animals just doesn’t feel right.
Sigma Beauty, Aromi Beauty, and Elixery Cosmetic House each produce high-quality cosmetics; offer a wide range of colors and products; are cruelty-free; and they are based right here in the Twin Cities.
The next time you’re in the market for a new lipstick, support your furry friends AND support local by purchasing a product from Sigma, Aromi, or Elixery!
